The Celts, that remarkable people who, influenced very considerable, in the last millenium B.C., the course of development of a large part of Europe, threatened the power of Rome in Italy and also gave to the Czech Lands the historical name of Bohemia. Literary sources and the rich harvest of archaeological research throughout Europe make it possible today to reconstruct their history in all its main aspects, from the Age of the Chieftains, in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., whose monuments are the strongholds and richly furnished burials in the region of the Upper Danube, through the period of incursions of Celtic warrior bands into South and Central Europe, to their definitive organization towards the close of the pre-Christian era, culminating in the founding of strategic and productive centres, having clearly defined "township" character.
