Crete, the most southerly place in Europe, is an island of golden beaches and lofty peaks. This is the Crete known to the many summer visitors. Away from the coastal resorts, however, there is another, hidden Crete where life continues much as it has done for generations. Hugging the mountainsides, tucked away in sheltered valleys or strung out along the old donkey routes, in Crete's mountain villages many of the old ways still endure. These villages are peopled by a few dozen or a few hundred and include old folks who have never travelled more than a few kilometres from their village and who have never beed off the island. Although it shares many of the characteristics of the Mediterranean lifestyle, Crete differs in many importat respects from the rest of Greece, which it only joined in 1913. Cretans speak a Greek which is pronounced with a strong accent and includes many words unique to the island, and some are relics from Minoan times.
